The Moomba Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) project in the South Australian outback will facilitate the capture and permanent storage of 1.7 million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) per year and is a critical step in decarbonising the natural gas production in Australia. Our Pipeline and Infrastructure team were chosen to supply the 55 km 273.1mm OD x 8.6 & 11.7mm WT API 5L X65MS PSL2 transmission pipeline that will transport the captured CO2 for injection and storage underground in the depleted gas fields of the Cooper Basin.
The pipe specification carried some challenges for our manufacturer, with the pipe being suitable for sour as well as extremely low temperature service, the pipe had to pass stringent coating and CVN impact testing on the weld line. Our Engineering Manager worked closely with both the Santos Engineering team, and the pipe and coating plants, to ensure the pipe and coating could be manufactured in compliance with the specified requirements.
